San Francisco, CA – KUSF kicks off the first-ever QUIETDRIVE
fundraiser with a free concert by KING KHAN AND FRIENDS on Wednesday,
September 24, 2008 at 7pm at Urban Outfitters in San Francisco (80
Powell Street). Longtime KUSF favorite DJ Carolyn will open the show.
Although admission is free, concert-goers must present an invite upon
entry which can be printed at http://www.kusf. org.

“We are thrilled to have King Khan launch our Quietdrive campaign,”
says David Hargis, KUSF program coordinator. “His latest album of
psychedelic R&B and cosmic garage rock has been at the top of our
charts for weeks and his live shows are always crazy. Honestly, I’m a
bit frightened for Urban Outfitters.”

King Khan is a Montreal-born, German-based musician of Indian descent
who cites Sun Ra and George Clinton as the inspiration for his
11-person psychedelic- soul big band revue, King Khan And The Shrines.
In 2007, King Khan released What Is?!, which received critical
acclaim
from all over the world, landing at #33 on Pitchfork’s Top
Albums of 2007. Vice Records released Khan’s latest album, The
Supreme Genius Of King Khan And The Shrines, in June.

DJ Carolyn, selected “Best DJ: Terrestrial Radio” in the San Francisco
Bay Guardian’s 2006 Readers Poll, can be heard weekly on Tuesdays from
noon to 3pm.

KUSF’s Quietdrive on-air fundraiser lasts through mid-October. Unlike
many non-commercial radio fund drives, the Quietdrive will not
interrupt regular programming for donation appeals. Instead,
listeners will be gently reminded of how important eclectic, freeform
radio is to the Bay Area. The Quietdrive will culminate with an
online sweepstakes giving away a brand new Toyota Yaris. More
information will be available at http://www.kusf. org soon.

Founded in 1977, KUSF was one of the first radio stations in the U.S.
to feature punk rock programming, and today KUSF offers cutting-edge
experimental, freeform music as well as a large variety of cultural
shows that serve the San Francisco community. KUSF can be heard at
90.3 FM throughout the Bay Area. A live stream is available at
http://www.kusf. org, and the station is also featured on the iTunes
radio player in the “Public” section. KUSF broadcasts from the
University Of San Francisco.

As soon as on of Adam Green’s people confirmed the interview, another one contacted us to say that Adam could not do an early morning interview on a show day (he’s playing at the Rickshaw Stop that night).  So, as far as I can tell, Adam Green will NOT be on my show this Tuesday May 20, 2008.  You should still listen though, what the heck?

May 16

It was confirmed this morning that Adam Green will be on my May 20, 2008 show.  He will play some live songs and chat with me about his new album and whatnot.  If you don’t know, Adam Green was in The Moldy Peaches with Kimya Dawson and he writes quirky and eccentric songs.  Be sure to tune in for what I hope to be a very cool show.

So KUSF turned 31 last Friday night and we celebrated with a soldout show at the Cafe du Nord featuring Wooden Shjips, Citay and Jenny Hoyston (of Erase Errata and Paradise Island).  I went to the show to see JennyHoyston and then to the Lucky 13 to DJ from about 11:00 to 12:30.  I hate to say this, but I was very disappointed by Jenny Hoyston’s set - at least as much as I saw.  She writes great songs, many of which are politically fueled, and puts out solid records in all of her incarnations.  I saw her with Erase Errata (opening for Mission of Burma) and she was incredible.  Unfortunately, I couldn’t stay for her whole set because the songs were all sort of singer-sensative songwriter stuff (like an open mic night or something), albeit they were well crafted songs, it was not what I was hoping for.  I hope it improved after I left.  Don’t get me wrong, I still love her and will continue to buy her albums.  I was just disappointed.

Dec 31

Hey man, like, it’s cold in my apartment and the Dude ain’t diggin’ it.  He seemed pretty happy, however, when I put the heat on.  In case you’re wondering, the Dude is my cat.  I have to DJ tomorrow - January 1, 2008 - at 6:00 a.m.  So I dunno what I’m going to do tonight - New Year’s Eve (a.ka. Amateur Night).  If any of my neighbors have a party, I’m hosed for sleep.  Things are good.

Dec 21

Ah, the lovely days before Christmas:  frantic people scurrying around buying gifts or pulling suitcases on wheels.  Rush, run, push, shove, thrash, scream, cry, collapse and rejoice!  Praise the Lord for this wonderful holiday - but don’t forget to get a gift for so-and-so or there’ll be cold stares and whispers for years to come.

So, I am skipping Christmas once again (it’s becoming a habit).  I just can’t support a consumer holiday that has religious backing.  The two should be separate.  I don’t need to mention the absurity of Jesus dying on the cross and rushing to Walmart for some great deal.

 I’m out.

Dec 14

Yes indeed, I am now in Los Angeles. And it was a pleasant trip getting here too. My friend Ezra gave me a ride to SFO yesterday at about 1:00 p.m. I went through the rather short security line where they made me remove my shoes and all metal objects. It was fast and easy (though I was prepared - 3 oz containers for my shampoo and stuff in a large ziplock bag) and I went right to the gate. Ten minutes later I was boarding an empty plane (I had a row all to myself, dig!) that was fancy and new.

The take off and landing was smooth, although some of the turns the pilot made were queasy-like (perhaps the pilot used to be a Blue Angel?). At one point I was looking out the window and we were facing pretty close to straight down - but only briefly. I’d like to mention that the flight attendants were all foxy ladies and mostly friendly.

Once I was at LAX I walked to the street and caught the LAX Fly Away bus to Union Station. It was a breeze. From there I caught a 704 Metro bus to Sunset and Echo Park Avenue. Then I crossed the street, caught the Dasher Bus to Baxter Street and it was a short (albeit uphill) walk to Flubber’s house. No problems at all.

I forgot my glasses but, what the heck, I’m on vacation.
